About me

Introduction Throughout history there have always been rulers who choose to gain and maintain their power at the expense of their people. Hyacinthe Rigaud’s painting “Third of May”, Scott Nelson’s photograph of protestors in Egypt, Osip Mandelstam’s poem “Stalin Epigram”, William Lammert’s Jewish memorial sculpture, and Francisco Goya’s “ The Third of May” are all artwork that have directly or indirectly depicted a ruler who abused their power. While viewing this gallery keep in mind the various responses people have to their ruler, the effect different rulers have on a painting style, and the different ways that the painters depict the rulers. Enjoy.
